State Park 9 & 10 Baseball State Title Quest Quashed

Chet Waggoner Little League, South Bend-    It began June 28th, the 9 & 10 Baseball Tournament Team (All-Stars) were the first State Park team to play.   It ended July 29th, when they were eliminated Monday from the State Tournament by Wabash Little League (District 9) 15-9.   They were, the last State Park team standing in All-Star competition.   The 9 & 10 All- Stars finished 6th in the State, with a 2-3 record, and 7-4 overall tournament record.   “Sixth in the state is pretty impressive, when you take into consideration that is whittled down from approximately 140 teams in the State of   Indiana”, said Manager Rich Arndt.

After qualifying for the Championship segment of the tournament by completing pool play with a 2-2 record, the SPLL All-Stars, seeded third, were matched against  the higher seeded #2 Wabash.

State Park jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead after two innings.   Led offensively by Patrick Arndt with three hits, and two hits apiece by Shawn Charlson, Zach Burris and Lucas Rhed, State Park’s aggressive baserunning, kept Wabash off-balance early.

Burris, starting for the sixth time in tournament play, held Wabash off for three innings, but was forced to leave with a high pitch count.   Wabash nibbled away, and turned to their version of “Big Papi”, Jordan Burnsworth, to carry them again, coming into play with seven home runs in the tournament..   Burnsworth did not disappoint his fans, slugging a three run home run, and a grand slam to account for seven of Wabash’s runs.   State Park was only able to muster two more runs, bowing out, 15-9.   It was the highest combined scoring game of the State Tournament.

Defense had been State Park’s trademark throughout the tournament;   early on, a diving catch by Rhett Rondinelli, and continued solid glovework in the infield gave the State Park faithful hope. As the game progressed however, State Park uncharacteristically committed five errors, adding additional runs to Wabash’s tally.   “The boys are nine and ten” said Arndt.   “They aren’t robots, they feel the pressure, it happens.   Unfortunately for us, it happened when our pitching needed help on defense.”

“Every boy on the team contributed and I can't imagine the team without any of them.  They certainly represented State Park as the class of the state and made us as parents as proud as we can possibly be.”, said John Burris,   Zach’s father.

“This team is by far the best I have ever had the privilege to manage,” said Arndt. “After the last game, I told the boys, you can lose the game and still be winners.   Thirteen as one……..winners all”

Ireland Little League (District 13) defeated Munster Little League (District 2), 10 – 0 in four innings to take the State Championship, and move on to the Super Regional in West Virginia.   Ireland had defeated State Park 8-1 earlier in the pool play segment of the tournament.
